ABOUT SANDALWOOD NUTS

Sandalwood nuts, come from the fruit of the sandalwood tree (Santalum Spicatum), native to Western Australia.

Sandalwood nuts have an amazing nutritional content and potential health benefits.

Sandalwood Nuts, from the Australian species Santalum spicatum, and native to Western Australia are highly valued for their unique anti-inflammatory properties and a nutritional profile that exceeds several popular nuts like the macadamia. They are a rich source of ximenynic acid, one of the rarest fatty acids in the world, which is hailed for its anti-ageing and powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

Nutritional Profile - Sandalwood nuts are considered a "superfood" due to their high concentration of protein and fibre combined with low carbohydrate levels.

  • Protein Content: these nuts contain 17% protein, which far exceeds the amount found in macadamias.

  • Dietary Fibre: They provide approximately 17% dietary fibre, nearly three times that of a macadamia nut, aiding in healthy digestion.

  • Healthy Fats: The nuts are comprised of about 60% fat, mostly monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), specifically oleic acid (omega-9), which is known to lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and boost good (HDL) cholesterol.

  • Essential Minerals: They are high in magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc, all necessary for proper bone, muscle, and heart function.

  • Vitamins: They are a significant source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage and supports brain and immune health.

Therapeutic and Medicinal Benefits - Research and traditional knowledge highlight several key health applications for sandalwood nuts.

  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The ximenynic acid found in the kernels is a potent anti-inflammatory agent used traditionally to treat rheumatoid arthritis and body aches.

  • Skin and Anti-Ageing: Rich in antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids, the nuts help combat oxidative stress and promote healthy skin barrier function. The oil is often used topically to hydrate skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

  • Cardiovascular Health: The high monounsaturated fat content may help reduce blood pressure and prevent the build-up of plaque in the arteries.

  • Digestion and Metabolism: Traditionally used by Indigenous Australians to ease digestive discomfort, the nuts' high fibre content also supports digestive health and may help regulate blood sugar.

  • Brain Function: The nuts contain neuroprotective properties that are believed to enhance memory, concentration, and overall brain health.

Environmental Benefits – there are many environmental benefits to Sandalwood, our favourite being the return of biodiversity to cleared farmland.

  • Reforestation and Land Rehabilitation: Sandalwood plantations are used to restore native vegetation on land that was previously cleared for dryland farming. Sandalwood is a hemi-parasite requiring a biodiverse range of trees to survive. You will not find it in a monoculture.

  • Soil Stabilization and Erosion Control: The trees protect soil from water and wind erosion, which is particularly beneficial in arid and semi-arid regions.
